For a small European country, Hungary has well over 400 official campsites to choose from for your next adventure.
The land is filled with a multitude of varying terrains and landscapes to enjoy and the weather is generally nice and warm during the summers. Because of its central location, the country is quite popular with campers from all over the continent.
There are sites to accommodate you no matter what type of camping experience you’re looking for.
There are small ones, large ones and those designed for tents only as well as others that provide electricity and showers, etc. If you’re looking for some peace and quiet, then you’ll be happy with most of the country’s smaller campsites, even though they may have fewer facilities.
One of the most popular areas for camping in Hungary is Lake Balaton as it features clear, warm sparkling water for swimming and is surrounded by scenic forests. There are many campgrounds to choose from on the lake’s shores and it’s also an ideal spot for cycling and hiking.
Hungary’s camping season generally runs from May until October, with the summer months being the most popular. You’ll find that some campsites stay open until the start of November and open in April.
Camping’s a favourite activity of Hungarians and it’s a wise move to book ahead for a site. If you have an international camping card you’ll receive a 10 per cent discount from all official sites in Hungary.
While it may be tempting, be aware that any type unauthorised camping isn’t allowed in the country.
