If there is the possibility for you to get lost in the wilderness you should make sure that you are prepared and for this you will need a wilderness survival kit. This is important even if you know all the basic techniques: it is difficult to survive if you don’t have the right supplies.
Research the Environment
The first and most important aspect is to gather information about the environment you will have to survive. For example it is useless to bring fish hooks to the desert. It is also possible that you will have to bring medication specific to the illnesses of the region. It is best to search the internet and to find some books.
Prepare for the Worst
Although you are hoping for the best, you should prepare for the worst. As it has been mentioned before, you must take medication with you and you should also have thread and needle in case you have to repair your clothing. Keep in mind that if you exclude an item, it might become just the thing you needed in a given situation.
Make a List
It is best to make a list of the things you think you will need. These could include first aid kit, fishing line, fishing hooks, nylon rope, water purifier, insect repellent, duct tape, sunscreen, garbage bag, waterproof matches, fire starter, burning lens, tinder, compass, radio, saw, flash light, and cotton balls.
The Container
Once you have the list, you should find a container which is suitable for all the items that you have chosen. This is supposed to be waterproof and it should be small enough for you to be able to carry it around if you had to. You should make sure that you don’t have any useless items with you.
Evaluate the Kit
If you are planning on using the kit for several trips, you should evaluate it from time to time to make sure that it is still suitable for your needs. It is important to check the expiration date of the medication that you have and to replace the worn or broken equipment.
Other Considerations
If you don’t know much about the climate of your destination, it is a good idea to make sure that you have both warm and cool clothes. Naturally there could be some other items as well that you might need. Just make sure that kit that you prepare won’t be unwieldy.
