Oklahoma isn’t known as one of America’s most glamorous states, but it’s sure one of the most beautiful and adventurous. This makes it an ideal location for camping and hiking trips. The landscapes are quite diverse with numerous lakes and wildlife areas to add to the fun for the whole family.
Oklahoma’s lakes and parks generally have special sections that are aimed at different styles of camping, such as backpack and base camping. Many of these regions also offer an ideal opportunity to enjoy other types of outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, hiking, cycling, water sports, picnicking, etc.
If you’re close to Braggs, Oklahoma, you’ll find Greenleaf State Park. This is an ideal spot for family outings as you can camp out in the bush in your tent or camp in luxury by renting a cabin. RV camping is also popular here and there is plenty to do.
Some of the most popular activities at Greenleaf include fishing, boating, and swimming. The park also has an amphitheatre, cooking grills, laundry facilities, a playground, miniature golf, hiking trails, basketball and volleyball courts, and hay wagon ride.
Over in the town of Broken Bow, you’ll come across Beaver’s Bend Resort Park. This park features heavily-wooded regions and wonderful camping. If you’d like to sleep indoors there are about 50 cabins for rent and RV and tent camping is common. The park also offers hiking trails, volleyball, tennis, water sports, fishing, and horseback riding.
One of Oklahoma’s most popular outdoor areas is Robbers Cave State Park in Wilburton, which used to be a hiding spot for horse thieves and bandits. This is an ideal location for horse camping as well as RV and tenting. It’s also a great place for rock climbing, fishing, playgrounds, fishing, boating, and golf. There are 26 cabins available and just over 120 campsites.
A popular spot with fishing enthusiast is Lake Keystone, which sits near Tulsa in the town of Mannford. You can enjoy all types of camping here, such as tents, cabins, and RVs. If you don’t want to rough it you can rent a cabin with a Jacuzzis. The hiking and fitness trails are excellent as is the fishing on Keystone Lake.
You’ll find that Oklahoma is filled with many lakes and quite a few of them have resorts which also offer camping as well as hotels. There are plenty of things for children to do, making these ideal spots for family vacations. Most of these lakes are close to small communities which make for interesting day trips. Some of the charming towns feature unique shopping opportunities.
A trip to Tulsa is always a good idea as there are several attractions such as the Tulsa Zoo and Bell’s amusement Park. The city also has a variety of eateries as well as some interesting cultural festivals throughout the warm weather months.
The summers in Oklahoma can get quite humid and the state gets its fair share of rain. Make sure you take plenty of water, bug repellent, and sunscreen when camping there in the summer. Many people find camping is more comfortable in the spring and fall in Oklahoma, as it’s less humid.
