As a passionate camper for more than 10 years, I can provide some advice regarding camping in Saudi Arabia.

Camping in Saudi Arabia will be one of those memorable experiences you could never forget.

The only place you can camp in Saudi Arabia is the Asir National Park, one of the greatest national parks in the world. The place has no electricity, water or modern conveniences but camping here is free.

The Empty Quarter is open up for explorers, camping in the desert is popular because you could never get bored in a place like that. You can ride camels, sand board down the dunes or just relax and enjoy the serenity and the vastness of a place that not many people have seen.

There are some things one has to know if he wants to travel in the Empty Quarter. First of all, it is necessary to first get permission from the National Commission for Wildlife Conservation and Development because the Empty Quarter is a protected area. The permission can easily be obtained and you don’t have to pay for it.

In my view, the Empty Quarter is not for Sunday drivers and even the most professional desert drivers can meet with difficulties in unknown terrain.

There are some rules you have to follow (even though it may sound a bit difficult, anyone that has ventured into the silence of the desert will tell you it’s worth the effort). The first rule is never to begin the new venture on your own.

You have to make sure someone knows where you are going and when you are going to return. Remember, you are going in the desert. You should make sure you bring a hat, a pair of sunglasses, light clothes for the day and warm clothes for the cold nights.

Don’t forget to take a comprehensive tool and first-aid kit. Another suggestion for the amateur desert campers – plan your desert trip for the winter, it is the perfect time for it, it’s rather undesirable to take it in the summer when campers could die of heat prostration if they don’t take certain measures. Treat this as an adventure and not like an “Indiana Jones” movie.

Camping in the Empty Quarter was a kind of religious experience to me and I strongly recommend novice and experienced campers to take advantage of a unique environment, to see the animals of the desert, to hear the haunting sounds of the dry and whistling winds.

The experience is something out of an adventure book, deeply anchored in the reality of that part of nature where survival is a battle with life and odds and when you can meet your true self. If you ever thought that camping is something corny, the Saudi Arabia will for sure change your mind.

The trip has left me speechless with the clear night sky of the desert, the jackal calls in the night air, the perfect silence of the morning when the only thing connecting me to reality was the wind telling about the Arabian Nights stories of my childhood.

An old native told me when I was buying water that the desert will make me a different person and I must say it did more than that.

We (my brother, my son and I) are planning to travel all around US this summer and we are still undecided whether to take the camper trailer or just go backpacking.

We are really wondering if it’s not a waste of time and effort than what it’s worth for the extra comfort and storage space.

Some people claim that an RV is a good family investment because it’s a big vehicle and you can bring a lot of stuff with you but I think an RV takes a lot of room in camp, and you won’t be able to leave your RV in a tight camp.

Indeed, the burden could really be disturbing and will surely slow our pace but finding the public parking for my RV can be a challenge, taking into consideration the fact that certain parks have RV restrictions.

This brings up the need to get a road map following all the RV camping sites on our route, checking if they offer supplies or just parking, if there is a gas station included and the check list just got bigger.

I’m sure you’ll agree that sleeping was better when you go RV camping. An RV is a home on wheels away from home; you can cook your dinner at the end of the day, sleep in a nice, clean bed.

However, the comfort in my RV will tempt me to spend too much time in it and my plans are not to miss any adventure, after all, this is the reason for which we are traveling, escaping routine and looking to see different places.

It is very important for me to explore, to see how an area really looks like rather than seeing only the tourist parts. On the other hand, I realized that we will really need a freezer and refrigerator because we will be traveling for about a month.

I must give an extra plus to the RV here because having food at hand and not having to carry it on your back and worry where to buy some more when it’s done makes a camping trip less troublesome.

The biggest advantage of backpacking is the fact that you will save a lot of money, RV camping costs a lot more and after all, gas is pretty expensive.

Backpacking is a lot cheaper and it can also have lots of the amenities an RV has such as: air bed, camp stoves, cooler with dry ice etc. An RV will surely get dusty and it’s going to take a lot of time to clean it up to the rental place.

The most important thing to me is to assure my son will enjoy his trip. An RV is thus quite safe; the security level in an RV campground is very good.

I have to say that I am not that comfortable with sharing washrooms and I really have to take my hot shower at the end of the day, so maybe RV camping is more advantageous to me.

Going to the North Pole was once an elusive aim that took the lives of many people that tried to explore this region.

Nowadays, due to modern aviation and achievements in other technologies, journeys to the North Pole by air or by icebreaker have almost become routine; this kind of expedition has been, in recent years, available to groups of tourists through adventure holiday companies.

The fact that journeys to the North Pole are now available to many people doesn’t mean that camping in the North Pole is just a regular adventure, as a matter of fact; it can be the adventure of a lifetime.

It is much easier and cheaper to take the plane and fly to Europe but then you will miss the excitement of taking a voyage in one of the most remote regions on the planet.

I must say when I first contemplated the decision I was not very fond of the idea, maybe because my imagination associated camping with tents lying in the middle of a green forest not very far from civilization.

Moreover, camping at the North Pole is a statement of courage for anyone who wants to venture in this wild, untamed land, a heart-opening experience.

It is probably the most extreme challenge ever because one has to deal with life-threatening situations. Such an expedition implies hard work; it is a journey for fit people, people ready to deal with many challenges that could scare even the most experienced explorer. It is surprising how ordinary people like me, are tempted to try on such an adventure.

The reason can be that life as fragile as it is can survive in the most unwelcoming places of the world, and that is why, the nature in its raw form is so seductive for the adventurers.

Furthermore, camping at the North Pole is a hard mission and a good physical and psychological preparation is absolutely necessary. At the end of the day, campers are obliged to have the necessary energy reserves to set up the camp and prepare dinner.

The most important thing, and the one that makes this trip so difficult, is that campers at the North Pole have to be able to regulate their body temperatures, so that they won’t get cold or too hot when they are moving.

This trip will encounter temperatures that barely register on the thermometer, between -20° C and -35°C, which means extremely cold conditions. Living in such cold conditions 7 days or more must be very challenging.

The North Pole can only be reached on journeys specifically set up for the purpose and the campers must have prior experience of the ascents and winter camping.

Reaching the North Pole is the perfect way to state that everything in life is possible and achievable. It is probably the most rewarding, enriching adventure, an experience that touches the very soul of any person that takes a plunge into this marvelous arctic landscape.
