Camping can be as basic or as luxurious as your heart desires, for some it is the simplicity of the great outdoors that has so much appeal but for others certain luxuries are essential for comfort even in a tent.

Often it is only once you have experience camping for yourself that you decide just what things you can forgo and those ‘must have’ items that make a big difference to your enjoyment of life under the stars.

For that reason it is better to not get carried away spending lots of money on fancy sleeping bags and state of the art cooking facilities.

You could even try borrowing gear from a friend or neighbor and try pitching a camping tent in your own back yard, to get an idea of what suits your idea of comfortable camping.

Lighting is inexpensive anyway but durability is worth looking out for, if you have no electricity then there are plenty of battery operated versions and you can now get eco-friendly devices that you simply wind up.

Whatever the climate night times will usually be very cold and a heated blanket might be a good way for keeping your body warm. The heat is directed straight where you want it to go rather than a heater where a lot is lost to the surrounding air.

Most people will miss the comfort of a mattress and will be affected with a bad back as a consequence. A lightweight foam mattress might be the solution but if you invest in a reasonable sleeping bag it might be better than you think.

There are many sources out there advising what to pack for general camping to make your camping experience as comfortable as possible.

But what do you pack if you choose to spend your camping vacation deep in the middle of the rainforests in some far away country?

The following tips and guidelines should provide some insight as to what to pack to survive as comfortably as possible in such a wild and fierce environment.

First and foremost, and the most important thing that you bring into the jungle, is to hire an experienced jungle guide that is native to the area. Only he can get you in and out of the jungle safely. He will also know all of the pitfalls associated with hiking and camping in the forests.

The key for a successful jungle camping experience is to pack as light as possible. Hiking through the rainforests is extremely difficult and you don’t want to be burdened with heavy equipment and supplies.

For sleeping purposes, a special camping hammock with attached mosquito netting is all that is needed. It’s lightweight, portable and easy to pack.

Wear lightweight and fast-drying clothing items and bring an extra pair of good socks. You will also need to wear knee-high rubber boots since the jungle floor is constantly muddy and there are swamps throughout.

A good, lightweight, waterproof backpack is mandatory to carry all of your things. The following are additional camping essentials that you will need to pack into your backpack.

Good mosquito repellent with deet

Poncho

Matches

Knife consisting of tools

Food items

Fishing line and hook (to catch dinner in local rivers)

Lightweight plastic dish, cup and fork

Machete (to assist with setting up camp and for trailblazing purposes)

Binoculars (optional) for wildlife spotting

Often the success of a camping trip depends on thorough research and lots of careful planning.

The foundation of this is an extensive camping check list, covering every single item you will every likely to need.

Keep it stored on your computer, adding to it as you find out new necessities for your vacation.

Before you embark on the journey, make sure every box is ticked and that nothing is forgotten. It may seem a bit extreme but certain items if left behind will make your dream of camping under the stars more of a misery.

Find out as much as you can about your intended destination, the internet is a great resource but the library will also be useful. Obtain weather forecasts just in case major storms are brewing and a few days delay may avoid them.

Do not rely on modern technology, as often cell reception can be non-existent and a battery pack is useless without a power source. Look out for certain items that work by being wound up, for example, radios and torches.

A basic first aid kit is essential, as is the necessary repellant against the various insects you will meet along the way. Do not underestimate the affect of constant attack from airborne creatures; it will have a bad affect on morale.

Always let someone know where you will be located just in case of an emergency. All the preparation will be well worth it while you are having your vacation in the great outdoors.

Camping is very popular and fun but it’s always better to be well prepared for any trip you take. Whatever the time of year good waterproofs are a must, along with strong footwear.

A complete spare set of clothes is worth taking and some extra pairs of socks.

A basic first aid kit should include antiseptic cream, band aids, gauze and a bandage.

Take easy to swallow pain relief tablets and insect repellent because camp site notoriously attract annoying visitors.

Only take a mobile phone if you are able to charge it and even then take small change in case you need to use a public telephone. Before you pack, be sure to write out a thorough checklist.

All camping equipment should be sturdy, avoid gimmicky gadgets they are often a waste of money and very unreliable. For example, multifunction pen knifes sound good but what’s the point of a bottle opener if you’re never going to use it.

If your camping trip involves cooking in the great outdoors, invest in easy to assemble and compact cookware. Take a stove that is easy to light and a tin opener that won’t let you down. Don’t forget cutlery, you might be able to improvise, but it’s easier not to.

Although a compass seems straightforward, if you have no sense of directions it’s useless. Potentially its misuse can cause more problems than not having it at all.

Reading maps is also a skill that does come naturally to some people. Take advice or make sure someone in your camping group is competent.

Now that you are at your sweet home it is time to unpack from your camping trip.

If you follow a checklist when you put away your gear you will be ready in an instant to go camping again without much preparation.

Taking care of repairs and other considerations upon arriving home is a smart way to prepare for your next hassle free camping trip.

While unpacking do a quick inventory. Was anything forgotten and left behind. Take care of all laundry duties as to your personal wash and sleeping bags and camp pillows.

Air out your tent. Set it up in your yard so that any camping smells such as the campfire are lessened for the next time you use it.

Sleeping bags and air mattresses need to be stored loosely so that they don’t become flat for the next trip.

Be sure that you clean all the utensils, dishes, cookware and glasses that you used on the trip. Repack them so that they are ready to go the next time you are.

Leftover food should be carefully gone over so as to ascertain whether it has spoiled or not. Any food that is not spoiled should be quickly stored in a refrigerator.

Clean any and all camp stoves and lanterns completely. Then refill them so that they too are ready to go the next time you are ready to head out.

Treating your camping gear as you would your furniture in your home will have it lasting a good long while. Camping gear is not cheap and the better you take care of it the better it will treat you when you are out in the wilds.

Taking precautionary measures and doing all the cleaning and refilling will make packing and readying yourself for the next camping trip much easier.

Many campers upon arriving home just want to take a hot shower and leave the unpacking for another day; big mistake.

It is imperative if your camping gear is going to last that you take the proper care of it not only when you are in the woods and the great outdoors but when you are ready to store it in your garage or storage shed.

Doing the necessary aftercare for your camping equipment will ensure that you will be greeted with no surprises the next time you are out in the wilderness.
